NYPD stats: 42 percent of murders occurred in Brooklyn last year

The overall number of homicides is up and 42 percent of them occurred in Brooklyn, according to statistics released by the New York Police Department.

Brooklyn had the highest murder rate among all the boroughs. East New York led the borough with 33 murders. The report also shows an increase in African-American victims last year.

The statistics are part of "Murder in New York City: 2010," an NYPD analysis of last year's 536 homicides. The number includes 19 people who died from injuries suffered in previous years.
