Fort Hamilton soldiers stand proud for Fleet Week

Soldiers stationed at Fort Hamilton watched proudly as ships sailed by to mark the start of the 24th Annual Fleet Week yesterday.

Canon fire and an 11-gun salute greeted the USS Iwo Jima as it sailed past the Verrazano Bridge. The USS New York also sailed by as the ship's men stood on the deck. The bow stem or front of the boat was made using 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.

The six-day long celebration features tours of ships, a military flyover and other events.
