TLC pushes for 1,500 more yellow cabs

The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is pushing to add 1,500 yellow cabs to their current fleet in an attempt to get more cabs in the outer boroughs.

The initiative is meant to improve taxi service for New Yorkers outside of Manhattan.

Like metered cabs, officials say the extra taxis will serve as street hails, so commuters will have another option other than flagging down livery cabs.

The TLC commissioner traveled to Albany this week to push lawmakers to support the proposal. The initiative has to be approved by the state Legislature and the City Council.
