Schumer seeks notice of fee in online returns
(AP) - Plan on returning some gifts this holiday?It may cost you up to 25 percent of the cost of the item and, if itwas purchased online, you may not have a clue about that"restocking fee."
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is asking the Federal Trade Commissionto end that. He wants the FTC to determine if failing to disclosethe restocking fee is a deceptive practice and to require retailersto prominently display that the fee will be charged.
The New York Democrat says a restocking fee is an importantelement for consumers to consider when choosing where to buy. The FTC says it has no position on the issue.
Several states including New York, Arizona, Pennsylvania, NewJersey and California require restocking fees to be prominent at stores.
