OTB shutdown put on hold
? The impending shutdown of the New York City Off-Track Betting Corp. has been put on hold, officials say.
The betting giant was slated to shut down after the close of business today, but the board for New York City Off-Track Betting Corp voted in an emergency session to postpone the closing until Tuesday.
The state Senate is poised to meet then in a special session and could vote on a reorganization plan for the 40-year-old enterprise. A spokesperson for Gov. David Paterson (D-N.Y.) said there doesn?t appear to be enough votes to pass any saving measures.
On Wednesday, board members of the betting giant voted to shut down all of its locations, including 15 in Brooklyn. The decision came one year after it filed for bankruptcy.
If OTB shutters as planned, more than 1,000 workers would be affected, state officials say.
