Study: Hunger rates still high in Brooklyn
The number of hungry in Brooklyn remained nearly the same this year as last, according to the annual report by the Coalition Against Hunger.
In Brooklyn, 64.4 percent of soup kitchens are not able to feed the hungry. Due to smaller budgets, 40 percent say they?ve had to turn away hungry residents and cut portion sizes or hours of operation.
The only improvement noted in the report was an increase in the use of food stamps. This puts less stress on local charities and could have even avoided a ?full-blown hunger catastrophe,? according to the executive director of the coalition.
