Brooklyn residents warned of utility scam
Brooklyn residents are being warned to watch out for "deals" being offered by people posing as utility company workers.
State Sen. Marty Golden says his office has received several complaints from people who say they've been conned. Betty Haggerty, of Bay Ridge, says she almost fell victim to the scam twice.
According to Haggerty, someone showed up at her home claiming to have a special discount from Brooklyn Union Maintenance, but then tried charging her more than $500. Residents have also reported receiving phone calls from people who pretend to be with that company or National Grid.
Golden says anyone with questions or concerns can contact his office.
