Continued opposition to new schools chancellor

(AP) - Opposition to New York City Mayor MichaelBloomberg's pick to lead the largest public school system isincreasing, with some critics showing up to a meeting of aneducation advisory board.

But the city's Panel for Educational Policy agreed at a meetingTuesday that it was up to the mayor whether to seek a waiver fromthe state education commissioner allowing media executive CathieBlack to get the job.

The mayor appoints eight of the 13 members of the panel.

Critics have called on the commissioner to deny the waiver, saying her background didn't make her fit to serve the city'sschool system.

Black said Tuesday that the mayor wanted "a strong, effectivemanager."
