Brooklyn Diocese announces church closures and mergers

The Brooklyn Diocese announced today plans to close and merge a number of churches with the borough.

The Church of Our Lady of Montserrate in Williamsburg as well as the Church of St. Edward the Confessor in Fort Greene are slated to be closed.

The Parish of St. Lucy/St. Patrick will merge into the Parish of Mary of Nazareth. The merged parish will go by the name of Mary of Nazareth.

The Parish of St. Gregory the Great will be merging into the Parish of St. Matthew. The merged parish will go by the name of St. Matthew.

The Parish of St. Ignatius will be merging into the Parish of St. Francis of Assisi/St. Blaise. The merged parish will go by the name of St. Francis of Assisi/St. Blaise.

The diocese cites financial reasons as the primary motivation for the closures and mergers. The closings and mergers will go into effect on Jan. 31.
