Homecrest neighbors vow to continue construction battle
Homecrest residents have been fighting for years to stop a local building owner from erecting a home they say is illegal, but now a path has been cleared for the construction to continue. Amid a downzoning change in Homecrest five years ago, Joseph Durzieh filed for an alteration on East 12th Street and proceeded to erect a five-story building.Resident Betty Travitsky claims the Department of Buildings issued Durzieh the wrong permit."It doesn't meet the requirement for an alteration," she says. "It's a new building."The DOB, however, defended its permit, and in an appeal earlier this month the Board of Standards and Appeals agreed, saying Durzieh has a right to complete construction under the old zoning laws.Neighbors, however, say they'll continue fighting.
