Hair salon cop gets promoted for bravery

The off-duty officer who successfully thwarted a would-be robber at a Bedford-Stuyvesant hair salon this weekend has been promoted for her efforts.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly officially promoted Ferris Jones from officer to detective today. Jones is a 20-year veteran on the force and has spent more than a decade working in the crime laboratory.

Jones was getting her hair done at Sabine's Beauty Salon yesterday when an armed robber barged in. Jones immediately identified herself as a police officer. Police say the suspect, Winston Cox, fired at Jones four times, but missed. Jones fired back and injured Cox.

Cox was arraigned today on attempted murder and robbery charges. Sources tell News 12 Brooklyn that Cox has an extensive criminal past.
