Brownsville church damaged in fire

Firefighters battled a blaze at a church in Brownsville early this morning.

One firefighter was seriously injured in the blaze. Several others were also injured.

Fire officials say they believe the fire began in the back of the Holy Love Pentecostal Church of God on Rutland Road. Heavy smoke made its way to the apartment buildings above, but tenants were able to safely evacuate.

Parishioners quickly gathered outside the building after hearing their beloved church was damaged by the fire. With approximately 80 congregants, the church deacon says they celebrated their 36th anniversary this past weekend.

Church members say they are looking to rebuild. The church deacon says services will be held this weekend, even if it means holding them outside of the destroyed church.

Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
