Busted straphangers catch break from MTA
Straphangers caught breaking the rules on trains and buses are getting a break on fines this month.
For the first time, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is offering to forgive late fees on unpaid tickets. The Transit Amnesty program allows riders to pay only the original amount of an outstanding ticket through the end of the month.
The organization is hoping the program will encourage some 3 million violators to pay their fines. An application for the program can be picked up at any transit booth or by visiting the MTA website.
