Midwood fire leaves at least 15 homeless
A two-alarm fire tore through a Midwood home early Friday morning, leaving at least 15 residents homeless for the holidays.
Fire officials say the flames started on the bottom floor of the house on East 37th Street and rapidly spread to the second- and third-story apartments. No one was injured.
Battalion Chief Mike Lee says using water to put out the flames proved difficult in the frigid temperatures.
"(The water) freezes on contact when it hits the ground, so it was really slippery," Lee says.
The Red Cross says it is providing all the victims of the fire with temporary shelter, clothing and food.
