School expansion threatens historic area
Councilman Bill de Blasio (D) is proposing amending a law regulating courtyards in order to allow a private school to expand.
The law keeps all Carroll Gardens courtyards situated 33 feet away from the street. The Hannah Senesh School, located at First Place and Smith Street, is planning to build an annex that would creep into the courtyard. Neighbors say if that happens, the charm of the historic area would be lost.
In a statement, de Blasio says the proposal to explore expanding the school "does not undermine the significant gains" that have been made in protecting the neighborhood.
De Blasio is expected to announce his amendment next week.
