Garza's family highlights nightlife safety

The family of a Brooklyn woman who disappeared from a nightclub last December traveled from Texas to New York to raise nightlife safety awareness at Pace University.

Laura Garza, a 25-year-old aspiring dancer, vanished on Dec. 3, 2008, after leaving the Marquee nightclub in the company of convicted sex offender Michael Mele.

Mele was never charged with Garza's murder, but he is currently serving up to three years in prison for an unrelated charge. Garza's relatives have launched a letter-writing campaign hoping to prevent Mele's parole.

A candlelight vigil for Garza will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in front of the Marquee nightclub.
