BK building evacuated after ceiling collapse
Tenants were evacuated from an East New York building Saturday morning after a second-floor leak caused part of the ground-floor ceiling to cave in.
Joy Simmons, Councilman Charles Barron's chief of staff, says the building's landlord caused portions of the ceiling inside a ground-floor bodega to collapse in trying to repair the leak. The Department of Buildings determined the conditions could be life-threatening and required an evacuation.
Most tenants were allowed to return to their apartments. Re-entry to the convenience store and the second-floor apartment are prohibited until repairs that fit DOB standards are made.
