Mill Basin veteran finally awarded medals

An 89-year-old Mill Basin man finally received his four medals of honor for serving in the military during World War II.

Herbert Jawitz enlisted in the Army in 1941 after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. He spent five years serving the United States, but his term was missing from military records.

Jawitz, who is just months from his 90th birthday, says he is thankful his service was recognized and happy he can pass down his medals to his grandchildren. Congressman Anthony Weiner helped rectify the military record omission.
