New efforts to make Empire Boulevard safer
The Department of Transportation says Empire Boulevard is shrinking from two car lanes in each direction into one in an effort to make the road safer.
The work is already under way on Empire Boulevard between Utica and Bedford avenues. The city says a narrow road reduces speeding and increases safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The transformation includes four elevated pedestrian islands for safety when crossing. The DOT will install bike lanes in each direction that will connect to Prospect Park.
The DOT will also add trees and landscaping as part of its plan.
