Eating healthy produce for less has became a reality for many Brooklyn mothers and children following Gov. David Paterson's announcement that farmers' markets will be accepting WIC checks.
Paterson says participants of the WIC program will be able to use their monthly checks at farmers' markets throughout the city to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
The WIC program is geared toward low-income pregnant women, new mothers and children up to 5 years old who are considered to be at a nutritional risk.
Farmers at Fort Green Park say accepting WIC checks does not only benefit women and kids who otherwise may not have been able to afford healthy food choices, but also expands the farmers' clientele.
