Residents can ride to Governors Island for free

For Brooklyn residents, getting to Governors Island just was just made a little easier - and free.
A free ferry service arrived in Brooklyn Saturday that now takes residents to Governors Island, just 400 yards and 10 minutes away, at no cost.
Some residents had never been to Governors Island, even after living in the borough for 20 years, but now they can enjoy miniature golf, dancing and bicycling.
Officials say they hope the new service will encourage Brooklyn residents to hop across to the island.
"Every year we've expanded our visitors. Two years ago we had 56,000, last summer we had 120,000. This year our goal is 200,000," says Leslie Koch, a Governors Island spokesperson.
The ferry service will run from now until Columbus Day weekend in October.
