Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind said Monday that he hopes the borough's Holocaust Memorial Park will remain in memory of only the Jews who were persecuted by the Nazis, rather than all victims.

The City Parks Department says it wants to change the park to incorporate memorials to the Nazis' other targets during World War II, including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, people with disabilities, political prisoners and Gypsies. The park currently has stone markers etched with memorials to Jewish communities and victims of the Holocaust.

Hikind says he is not against a memorial for the other persecuted groups, but thinks the park should remain dedicated to the uniquely Jewish experience of the Holocaust. Hikind's mother, Frieda Hikind, survived the death camp at Auschwitz.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly lesbian, both say the memorial should include the diversity of the victims to appropriately reflect the events of the Holocaust.
