More efforts are under way to help unclog streets in downtown Brooklyn and keep pedestrians, cyclists and drivers safe.

The Department of Design and Construction has been extending curbs along Third Avenue to give more visibility to pedestrians and drivers. The construction is part of the city's downtown Brooklyn Traffic Calming Program. The project spans from Brooklyn Heights to Gowanus.

Wylie Norvell, of Transportation Alternatives, says the program is modeled after a 2004 study. He adds that even though the Department of Transportation has made strides since the study, he is excited to see even more changes.

"These aren't big changes. Most people won't notice when they're in, but they have a very subtle impact on behavior and they make driving a lot safer and walking a lot safer," says Norvell.

The DDC says other updates include painting crosswalks and the installation of street lighting. Those aspects of the plan are expected to be completed by next summer.
