Wealthy BK couple charged with welfare fraud
A well-off Brooklyn couple was arrested Wednesday and charged with welfare fraud involving tens of thousands of dollars, police say.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, Carmine and Rosa Gargano applied for and collected more than $30,000 in Medicaid benefits while collecting rent from 13 properties, the ownership of which the couple allegedly concealed.
Speaking of the charges against the Garganos, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes called it one of the worst welfare fraud cases he has ever seen. If convicted, the couple will face up to seven years behind bars.
