Developer balks at Gowanus cleanup
A major developer is threatening to walk away from a project near the Gowanus Canal if a planned cleanup proceeds.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency has proposed placing the contaminated canal on its Superfund list of sites that have been abandoned. But developer Toll Brothers says a Superfund listing would take years to resolve, possibly forcing them to scratch plans to build affordable housing.
The EPA says public input on the proposed Superfund listing is encouraged. The agency is giving the public a 60-day window to voice its concerns.
