Coney Island gears up for season opening
Coney Island workers spent Saturday checking rides and making last-minute preparations before the opening day of the season.
Inspectors gave their seal of approval to the 82-year-old Cyclone and Dino's Wonder Wheel, while crews went around painting and polishing rides in anticipation of Sunday's event.
Although Astroland was shut down last year, Thor Equities, the company that bought the amusement park's land, says the space will not be vacant for long. Plans are under way to bring in new rides and a freak show for the summer.
"If they come, there will be something here to hold the crowd," says Cyclone manager Jerry Mendito.
