Tough Times: Walk-in tales
Sometimes to get a job, you have to get out there in person and ask who's hiring. However, some local store owners have a few tips for those who want to try this route.
Employers say going into a store and inquiring about a job is a good way to get ahead. However, there are certain things a person should and shouldn't do when entering a place of possible employment.
One tip, dress the part.
"Some people come in with their jeans all the way down, showing their underwear," says store owner Albin Alvarado.
Another tip, be professional. Bring a resume and have a firm handshake.
"One guy had a hot dog with him, eating and asking for a job," says store owner Vinny Bilda. Finally, don't be discouraged if a store isn't hiring. Persistence usually pays off.
