Trail honors Red Hook's role in the Revolutionary War

A ceremony was held Wednesday to commemorate the creation of a heritage trail celebrating Red Hook's role during the Revolutionary War.
Historian John J. Burhard urged Councilwoman Sara M. González to introduce legislation to create the heritage trail. The path follows 10 stops along the renamed Red Hook Lane, a trail used by George Washington.
That path played an integral part in the aftermath of the Battle of Brooklyn. Washington used the trail for a massive evacuation to avoid falling to the British.
"It is our fondest hope that from the date of this ceremony forward, Red Hook's children will view these signs enabling them to say, 'This is Red Hook - this is where America began'," says González. "This will aid in reversing the false negative reputation of the area."
