The city's Department of Consumer Affairs secured more than $5 million in restitution for wary New Yorkers who were harassed or left in a lurch last year.

DCA says it received more than 6,000 complaints during the last fiscal year, up 46 percent from the previous fiscal year. New Yorkers consistently complained about home improvement contractors, debt collectors, used car sales, electronics and furniture.

Officials say all New Yorkers have a right to be treated fairly, and if they aren't, they can file a complaint with the city's free 311 hotline. DCA also recommends researching whether the seller has a license and urges all consumers to obtain a detailed receipt.
