Bushwick tenants rally against hazardous conditions
Tenants living at a building with more than 100 housing violations rallied Saturday, calling for an end to what they call hazardous living conditions.
The residents gathered outside 761 Hart St. calling for action against the alleged slumlord who has neglected them.
Residents like Anna Goosman say calls to the landlord with complaints of mold and other problems have gone unanswered. The conditions have allegedly caused problems for tenants with asthma. Goosman also says her 8-month-old daughter has developed a reoccurring rash due to the mold.
According to Department of Health regulations, the mold problem isn't severe enough to force the landlord to fix it. The current regulation states the mold has to cover 25 square feet to warrant action.
Tenants at the rally say they plan to work with the City Council on a bill that would make it illegal to maintain hazardous conditions like the ones at their complex. The landlord has not returned attempts to contact him by News 12 Brooklyn.
