Seven people have been indicted for allegedly smuggling $10 million worth of cocaine into a New York City port, the Brooklyn district attorney said Thursday.

According to Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes, "Operation Final Voyage" started with a tip that people were looking for a corrupt longshoreman to help unload narcotics in a drug ring that stretched from Panama and China to New York.

Hynes says an undercover investigator from the district attorney's office posed as that longshoreman. The agent was able to intercept 75 pounds of cocaine buried deep within three shipments into Staten Island.

The DA says the trips were test runs for a bigger shipment with five times as much cocaine.

Six of the defendants face up to 45 years in prison if convicted of first-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and second-degree conspiracy charges.

The seventh defendant is charged with endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly bringing her 7-year-old to pick up more than 12 pounds of cocaine.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the DEA and the NYPD's Waterfront Commission also took part in Operation Final Voyage.
