Community leaders and organizations are mapping out the future of Flatbush with their Imagine Flatbush 2030 project.
The nonprofit Municipal Art Society and the Flatbush Development Corporation, comprised of area businesses, held a public meeting Wednesday at Brooklyn College. Residents attended the forum to provide feedback about how they feel Flatbush should function.
"I would like to see probably more programs geared toward children," said resident Sandra Harris. "You see a lot of kids walking the streets aimlessly, especially in the summer."
Some expressed concern about the neighborhood developing too quickly.
Imagine Flatbush 2030 is meant to complement Mayor Michael Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030. The mayor's project aims to create a "greener" and more sustainable New York City before a predicted influx of new residents.
Brooklyn is home to more than 2 million people, and more than 160,000 call Flatbush home. Imagine Flatbush 2030 organizers plan to hold two more workshops in January and February to address local concerns.
