City, BK schools will be forced to make the grade
Students in Brooklyn and the rest of the city won't be the only ones getting report cards this year. The Department of Education will start giving schools across the city letter grades for their performance. The grades will be based on standardized tests and schools will be compared to other schools with the same demographics. If a school gets an 'A,' it will be eligible for more funding. A school that gets a 'D' or a 'F' could get a new principal or be shut down. Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says the grading system will help keep schools on their toes. Critics of the plan say they are concerned the information collected for the grades may be inaccurate or unfair.
