The Department of Education will begin ranking schools with letter grades in order to hold schools accountable, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says.
Starting Monday, Nov. 5, 1,200 schools throughout the city will earn grades A through F. An A grade may earn the school extra money, while a D or F may mean the principal?s days are numbered.
Klein says the letter grade won?t stand alone, but will be delivered along with information about the school?s performance and how it compares to other city schools.
The bulk of the grade will focus on students? scores, achievement and progress, Klein says.
The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, the union representing city school principals, is opposed to the plan. It says the grades will not be accurate or fair.
Parents group Time Out from Testing says the city should focus more on teaching and less on tests.
