Bill aims to fight tenant harassment in city, BK
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn introduced a bill Wednesday at City Hall to combat tenant harassment.
The measure defines harassment as landlords posting excessive notices, denying services, pressuring tenants to take buyouts, inquiring about immigration status and threatening tenants.
Quinn said slumlords often use the tactics to force out rent-stabilized tenants so they can command higher rents.
Under the bill, landlords would be issued a violation and fined up to $5,000.
The City Council will hold two public hearings on the matter before taking it up. The process is expected to take a few months.
