A Brooklyn jury found a man guilty Thursday in the death of a gay man during an attempted robbery.
The jury found 21-year-old Anthony Fortunato guilty of second-degree manslaughter as a hate crime and attempted petty larceny.
Prosecutors said Fortunato was among a group of men who tried to rob Michael Sandy, 29, after meeting him through the Internet. Sandy ran into traffic on the Belt Parkway after the attempted robbery at Plum Beach in October 2006.
Fortunato's attorney unsuccessfully tried to have the hate crime charge dropped, claiming his client is gay.
Fortunato, who faces up to 25 years in prison, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 11.Related information:
