One of the city's most dangerous, but beautiful, intersections is getting a major safety upgrade in Brooklyn.
According to the Department of Transportation, about 20 accidents occur each year at Grand Army Plaza; down from nearly 70 before 2001. Officials say the number is still too high.
"We are building three large landscaped pedestrian islands with five crosswalks, 10 pedestrian signals and a protected bike path," city Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan says.
The bike path will connect Prospect Park to local streets. Other plans include reducing the number of car lanes entering the circular plaza from Eastern Parkway from three to two.
The DOT expects to complete the $400,000 project by Thanksgiving.
