Bed-Stuy building boasts massive energy savings

Habitat for Humanity unveiled a groundbreaking type of new building in Bedford-Stuyvesant Tuesday.
The nine-unit affordable condominium complex at Halsey Street and Marcus Garvey Boulevard was constructed with cost-cutting insulated concrete forms (ICF).
The material looks like Styrofoam and stacks like LEGO blocks. Concrete is then poured into the center.
The organization and the New York City Concrete Promotional Council invited construction and real estate professionals to an open house to learn about the benefits of building with ICF.
Experts believe ICF, relatively new to the New York City construction industry, will reduce homeowners' energy bills 50 to 80 percent.
