Health officials hope to 'buck' trend of poor eating
City health officials are expanding a program in Brooklyn that encourages residents to get their daily serving of five fruits and vegetables.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene plans to distribute about 15,000 "health bucks" this summer, each valued at $2, through its office and local community groups.
Select farmers markets are participating in the program that allows recipients to use the health bucks to purchase produce.
The health bucks will go to residents in Bushwick, East New York and Fort Green. Experts say the plan is designed to reduce high obesity rates in Brooklyn neighborhoods.
