Schoolyards turn into playgrounds for mayor's PlaNYC

School is out for the summer, but school playgrounds will remain open to communities, the mayor announced Monday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is turning 69 schoolyards into year-round playgrounds as part of his PlaNYC 2030. The plan calls for every resident to be within a 10-minute walk of a park by 2030.
Bloomberg said the 69 playgrounds will serve approximately 100,000 people from 8 a.m. until dusk. The city plans to convert more than 200 schoolyards to playgrounds in the future.
Some lawmakers are praising the move, saying the schoolyards were underutilized in the past.
The plan will cost about $111 million.
