SUNY Maritime college in Throgs Neck is working to preserve the history of a retirement home that was dedicated to sailors.
Sailors' Snug Harbor was located on Staten Island and served as a retirement home for sailors, but closed in the early 1970s.
Historians at SUNY's archive facility in the Bronx credit one of the college's librarians who was able to secure most of the records and photographs from Sailors' Snug Harbor by removing them from dumpsters.
Hundreds of records, books, documents and photos are now located in the archives of the college.
Through a grant provided by the Metropolitan New York Library Council, the college says it is now in the process of digitizing the collection.
