Bronx man charged with attempted murder of off-duty cop

A Bronx man has been charged with attempted murder of an off-duty police officer.

Joseph Baez is accused of shooting two people, one of which was officer Nelson Vergara, 36, in University Heights on June 24. Both victims survived.

Baez, 21, is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon, assault and harassment. He will remain in jail at least until his next court appearance on August 9.
