Study: Extra pounds can raise risk of breast cancer relapse
A new study says that women who live a healthy lifestyle may prevent the reoccurrence of certain types of breast cancer. A Bronx doctor was the lead author of the study. Dr. Joseph Sparano, of the Montifiore Einsten Center for Cancer Care, says that putting on even a few pounds can raise the reoccurrence risk of estrogen-fueled breast cancer, the most common form. The study says there's a 30 percent risk of relapse for patients who were obese at the time of their diagnosis. Those patients also have a 50 percent higher risk of death than those who had a normal weight at diagnosis. Sparano says the weight factor could help address the problem of reoccurring breast cancer in some women, in addition to normal courses of treatment.
