NYPD: 2 suspects in custody for off-duty officer shooting
Two suspects wanted in connection with the shooting of an off-duty officer in The Bronx are now in police custody.
The arrests came after wounded officer Ivan Marcano received a bedside promotion to detective from NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He was then released from Bronx Lebanon Hospital to hundreds of cheering comrades.
The 27-year-old was shot in the chest Wednesday after police say he tried to stop three suspects from robbing a 65-year-old man on Harrison Avenue. Marcano then fatally shot 18-year-old Prince James after the men fled the scene in a white Mustang, only to get into a car accident.
After a nearly two-day search, police tracked down the other two, 20-year-old Jason Leiva, and a man with the last name Ortega. Authorities say James is the suspect who opened fire on Marcano.
Marcano will spend the next few weeks healing at his home in the University Heights section of The Bronx until he gets the all-clear to head back to work.
