Bronx man treats furry friends as labor of love
Local pet owners are lauding a Bronx man known for owning the only full-time animal shelter in the borough. Pedro Rosario started NYC's Top Dog, a nonprofit facility at Newbold and Seabury avenues. After opening eight months ago, it currently houses 100 dogs and cats from kill shelters and families who could no longer care for them. "He's here every day," says Robert Cancel, who works next door. "He just works hard and he's always got a smile on his face." Rosario says he relies on donations, but that most of his expenses are out-of-pocket. He worked in animal control for 16 years before launching the business, which he runs with the help of four employees.
