Widow struggles to raise money to save husband’s bar, Sunny’s, in Red Hook
The popular Sunny's bar in Red Hook may close its doors after decades in business.
The bar predates both world wars and the invention of television.
But former owner Sunny Balzano died last year, and his wife, Tone Balzano Johansen, is struggling to keep the bar open.
Johansen owns about a quarter of the bar, after ownership split upon her husband's death. Other beneficiaries want to sell it, but she has worked out a deal to buy them out if she can make a $50,000 down payment.
"A lot of people are sending me checks, donating," she says. "I think this bar has had a lot of people that care, that just care about it."
To help make the down payment, she is hosting an art fundraiser on May 1.
