Local nonprofit gives away free prom dresses

Prom night is one of the most memorable nights for any high school student, and one local nonprofit is stepping up to make sure those in need of prom dresses will have them for the special evening.

A Sister's Hand is aiming to make sure every girl in Brooklyn feels special. The group hosted a prom-dress giveaway on Friday inside of the Boys and Girls Club on Bedford Avenue.

Over 100 girls were expected to show up to pick out their dream dress for no cost. Dresses can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars, in addition to the costs of shoes, hair and accessories.

The savings make a big difference, according to parents like Luz Rosario, who's sending two children to college next year.

"There's a lot of girls that will not go to prom because they can't find a dress -- their parents can't really pay for it," Rosario says. "This gives an opportunity."
