High rent drives dance studio out of Prospect-Lefferts Gardens
The founder of AbunDance Academy of the Arts says rising rent prices are forcing her and other businesses to leave Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
Karisma Jay, 29, says she poured everything she had, including $40,000, into her dance space at 430 Rogers Ave. But after three years, her rent doubled to $5,000 a month.
"I wasn't expecting for a jump this high," she told News 12.
The dance teacher is now looking for a new area to continue teaching dance.
"We do homework help, I help with college applications ... there's just a lot that goes into this," says Jay. "It's not just some business closing."
The manager of the building says there was no other choice but to raise the rent. Concorde Management Company of New York says if they didn't raise the rent, tenants in the building would have had to make up the difference.
The students at the dance academy are currently practicing a few blocks away in a temporary space.
