Workers urge caution during National Work Zone Awareness Week

In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week, highway and bridge workers are urging drivers to slow down when they see orange cones on roadways.

In the summer of 2014, Giavonni Caballero and his colleagues were working along the West Side Highway when a driver, who had fallen asleep behind the wheel, smashed into one of their trucks.

"The impact was so hard that it pushed the truck forward and almost into us," says Caballero. "Thinking back on it, it could have been a lot worse."

The workers were not injured during the incident.

Over the last two decades, four Department of Transportation workers have lost their lives and dozens more have been injured.
