Petition calls for rollback of Verrazano toll increase

The recent toll increases for drivers heading over the Verrazano Bridge into Staten Island has prompted an online petition aimed at rolling them back.

What used to cost $16 to cross into Staten Island now costs $17. The changeover occurred on March 19.

While the $1 increase may seem small, drivers are calling on the MTA to bring the price down. A petition started by Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) has about 1,500 signatures.

"For the MTA to recognize the toll burdens for residents on one side of the Verrazano Bridge, means the MTA must recognize the toll burdens for the residents on the Brooklyn side of the bridge," the petition states. "Anything less would give a new definition of highway robbery."

The $17 price is the cash price. For EZPass users, the price for crossing into Staten Island is $11.52.
